Abstract

Circular economy is a relatively new model that aims to redefine the conventional linear process of “produce, consume and dispose” based on eliminating waste and pollution from design, keeping products and materials in use as long as possible and regenerating natural systems; with the purpose of contributing to sustainability. However, in the context of small and medium-sized companies (SMEs), the adoption of this model has been complicated due to the characteristics of this type of entity. In addition, the objective of this research was to analyze the perception of entrepreneurs towards the adoption of circular economy practices. This research had a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional design and an instrument composed of seven dimensions was applied to a sample of 305 owners, managers, or supervisors of SMEs in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche. The results suggest a relative predisposition of entrepreneurs towards this type of initiatives; however, there is evidence of financial, legislative and market barriers principally that prevent the adoption of sustainable practices in the business environment, limiting the transition towards a circular economy.
