Abstract

This work aimed to survey the actions developed by the City of Recife, within the context of a Sustainable City, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Regarding climate change, the “Moclima Program” allows the population to monitor carbon reduction targets and climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. The “Rotas Cicláveis” and “Bota pra Rodar” projects expand the city's cycling network, encourage bicycle use, reduce polluting gas emissions, and promote social inclusion and sustainable transport. Concerning green areas, “Parque Capibaribe” aims to transform Recife into a park city, increasing the public green area per inhabitant. The “Bora Plantar” program offers free tree planting, increasing urban vegetation coverage. In solid waste, the “Cidade Plástica” project raises awareness of plastic pollution through an educational web series. Socio-environmental education is promoted by the “Educate Program”, which operates in more than 100 municipal schools, forming citizens aware of and engaged with environmental issues. In the context of food security, the “Mãos Solidárias Construindo Hortas Comunitárias” project establishes community gardens in peripheral neighborhoods, promoting food sovereignty and educating the community about sustainable agricultural practices. These initiatives demonstrate the City Hall's commitment to sustainability and improving the quality of life of the population of Recife, aiming to mitigate environmental impacts and promote social inclusion and the well-being of citizens.
