Migration and remittances in the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca

Abstract

The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) refers to a decentralized public body that was established by Decree on June 14, 2019. The CIIT region is made up of 33 municipalities of the state of Veracruz and 46 that belong to the Oaxaca entity. The strategy for the connection of the populations in the macro work that will unite the ports of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos suggests the delimitation of 10 development poles. Regarding the migration issue, the municipalities cataloged in the CIIT, specifically for the state of Oaxaca, present varied conditions, although in general an area of ​​low migratory movement from its inhabitants and homes is perceived, and remittances are strongly concentrated in some populations. Thus, despite the fact that Oaxaca ranks as one of the states with the greatest migration to the US and a growing attraction of foreign currency, the study area participates little and does not benefit from these resources. About 50% of the municipalities are in a situation of high and very high marginalization. The migration that the area registers is mainly that of transit, of groups that come from the south, including Central Americans, who seek the railway routes that connect to the access to the northern border of Mexico, whose main destination corresponds to the United States of America.
