Overview of transit migration in Mexico, 2020 – 2024

Abstract

The proposal we present focuses on the study of the reconfiguration of the migratory dynamics that has taken place in Mexico in the last two decades. In a context characterized by the increasing immigration restriction imposed by the government of the United States of America. For Mexico there is a double role in the migration chain, since conventionally, it was located as an issuing country; a situation that has taken a turn because today, it is considered a country of transit and residence for populations from other countries. The consultation and review of statistical sources from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB) has created a panorama of the events of transit migration in Mexico. The study period includes the phase before and after confinement due to COVID-19, since the massive entry of migrants was already present before the start of the health crisis. So, once the end of confinement was announced, migrant caravans have become more numerous and frequent, resulting in the migrant population continuing to increase at an alarming rate.
