Abstract

Sustainability has become a crucial element in helping humanity tackle the significant challenges encompassing the social, environmental, and economic domains. In this regard, the role of students as future professionals plays a fundamental part in addressing both present and future demands. The attitudes and knowledge of university students in Mexico and Colombia towards sustainability are being evaluated. The study is based on a qualitative and descriptive documentary review, utilizing databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct. Through this analysis, it is observed that, despite continuous efforts by higher education institutions (HEIs) to provide appropriate skills to future professionals, it is necessary to incorporate sustainability-related topics and activities into the curriculum as part of the pedagogical approach. Working on real-world issues becomes a motivating factor, generating an incentive towards social responsibility and the development of social skills among students. Furthermore, it is crucial to evaluate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in HEI curricula, with active involvement from professors and students in project creation and identification of social needs. Consequently, addressing inequalities, economic opportunities, and even environmental impact in the social environment can be achieved.
