It is possible to consider that several of the problems that higher education students present in the area of mathematics may have their origin in basic education; It is very likely that their fear, frustration and lack of motivation to solve exercises that involve arithmetic operations and mental calculation, demonstrate the deficiencies of the teaching-learning processes of the teachers who were at the forefront of their education, resulting in high failure rates today. This article exposes some of the problems generated from the traditional teaching of mathematics, as well as the low academic performance of basic education students in mental calculation, based on the above, it is proposed as alternative to the development of this skill, the application of the Open Method based on Numbers (ABN). This quantitative research, with a experimental explanatory scope, gives a general overview of its implementation in students of the Benito Juárez Federal Elemental School, located in Tenango de Arista, Tenango del Valle, Mexico, who were taken as a case study to obtain results that allow us to observe the differences with respect to traditional education, given that, according to the theoretical framework of this research, the ABN methodology not only improves mental calculation processes, but it allows the development of number sense and motivating learning.
