Abstract

Emotional addiction is a toxic, dysfunctional and dangerous attachment that is created between two people. This phenomenon does not discriminate between genders, manifesting itself in a similar way in relationships where one person is linked to another with toxic behaviour. As we will see, emotional addiction is similar to addiction to different substances such as alcohol or drugs, and is suffered by both men and women. The aim of this study is to show the intensity of the emotional bond and the loss of control over one's own impulses, evidencing symptoms such as the obsessive need to be with the toxic partner and the centralisation of one's life in that relationship. The article analyses the typical phases that an emotionally addicted person goes through, revealing a pattern that goes from initial idealisation to fear of break-up and tolerance of harmful behaviour. It also delves into the different types of emotional attachments, emphasising the difference between emotional dependence and emotional addiction.
